Adaptation Review: The Hobbit, by J. R. R. Tolkien, Part I

I watched The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey today, and as a fan of the novel since my childhood, I was thoroughly disappointed. Although I recognize that novel adaptations must make some alterations from the original work in order to be filmable, this movie was utterly faithless in its conversion. I have a lot to say about this, so it’s going to take me more than one post. I’ll talk first about what worked for me.

Adaptation Review: Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy by John Le Carre

I had been hesitant about doing movie reviews, since I am far from a movie expert, but it seems to me that adaptations are fair game.

Tinker Tailor was a fascinating reading experience, one that was humanized by the movie. The first three quarters of the book were a difficult read. If I had not had a outside desire to read the novel, I don’t think I would have finished it.
